Light Moves: A Buyers’ Guide to Lightweight RVs

These trailers and Truck Campers with Dry Weights of Less Than 5,000 Pounds are Easy to Maneuver and Fully-Equipped for Adventure

Image Caption: Photo Credit: Airstream

Buying a new RV can be an expensive proposition, but there are ways to minimize the costs. In the case of trailers and truck campers, the best way to avoid digging even deeper into your wallet is to buy an RV that is towable by a vehicle that’s already in your driveway. And, with the popularity of midsize trucks and SUVs, chances are you’re already halfway to your next rolling dream home.

The first step toward towing a trailer with a vehicle you already own is to determine the vehicle’s tow rating and whether it is already properly equipped for towing (i.e., a towing package). The equipment aspect is simple enough; if you bought it new, you likely already have a good idea. The tow rating is slightly more involved but still rather simple. You can check out RV Magazine’s annual “Guide to Towing,” published each February, and there are plenty of sources online as well. Simply Google, for example, “2021 Ford F-150 tow rating,” and you’ll find your answers. You may also be able to enter the vehicle’s VIN number online to check its exact trim and capabilities.

Once the tow rating has been established, find the tow vehicle’s payload rating (especially in the case of a truck camper). This is important because that figure represents the maximum allowable weight for cargo and passengers. Considering that a trailer places about 10% of its total weight on the vehicle’s hitch (and a camper 100% of its weight in the truck bed), you need to be sure the total weight of your ready-to-tow vehicle, plus any trailer or camper weight, doesn’t exceed the payload.

There are other things to consider when towing larger trailers or fifth-wheels but to simplify things, we’re only showcasing some of our favorite trailers and truck campers with a dry weight of less than 5,000 pounds. Note that the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of some exceeds that 5,000-pound threshold. That’s because the GVWR is the maximum allowable weight of the RV, fully loaded with water, propane, cargo, and the like. Plan and pack accordingly, and always stay within your tow vehicle’s absolute weight ratings.

Jayco Jay Flight SLX 184BS

A bunkhouse in a 21-foot, lightweight travel trailer? You betcha, pardner. Combine that with the RV queen up front and the dinette (or optional jackknife sofa), and there’s space for the whole crew in a trailer that doesn’t even hit the 3,500-pound mark.

But the 184BS is more than a sleeping spot; seamless countertops, a tub/shower combo, an 8-cubic-foot 12-volt refrigerator, vinyl flooring, and backup camera prep are all a nod to the family audience that will no doubt be interested. As are the fold-down solid steps and a 12-foot power awning with LED lights outside. Add in Jayco’s two-year limited/three-year structural warranty, and you’ll want to wrangle one for yourself.
