Destination trailers have seen a rise in popularity over the past few years, thanks in part to innovative design and plenty of luxurious amenities. As a result, some of the top RV manufacturers have rolled out new models built to entice buyers looking for something beyond the traditional RV experience. This has led to some interesting and exciting new options with interiors that more closely resemble a modern cottage that can be towed to a campground.

What is a Destination Trailer?

Technically, a destination trailer is a subcategory of a travel trailer. Most are designed to be towed to a campsite using a standard hitch rather than a fifth-wheel, although due to their size, owners will likely still need a heavy-duty truck for that task. That’s because destination trailers tend to be larger than a typical travel trailer, especially in width and height.

Open and airy interiors are a hallmark of most destination trailers. These RVs are known for their high ceilings, residential-style appliances, and multiple beds and bathrooms. They may even have lofted sleeping or recreational areas, along with outdoor patios and luxurious living rooms. Large windows, sliding glass doors, and bright skylights are also common, creating an environment that feels closer to glamping rather than traditional RV camping.

Because these RVs tend to be larger—and taller—than regular travel trailers, they can be a bit cumbersome to move around. As a result, many destination trailer owners opt to park them in one location for extended periods or permanently leave them in the same spot. While they can be towed when needed, they don’t always have the support infrastructure to support frequent travel. Instead, they are designed to provide an upscale camping experience at a favorite location. Hence the name—destination trailers.

Destination Trailers vs. Park Models

Destination trailers are sometimes referred to as park models, and in many ways, the terms are interchangeable. However, there are some important distinctions to point out for anyone who is considering buying this type of RV. Most notably, a destination trailer usually comes with holding tanks (fresh, gray, and black water), which affords it more mobility and independence. Park models typically lack holding tanks, requiring them to be directly connected to water and waste facilities.
