The history of RVs dates back more than a century, with early models offering owners what, at the time, was unprecedented luxury in a vehicle. But over the decades, what we thought was possible in a motor coach has evolved and changed, to the point where early RV owners probably wouldn’t recognize the rigs that are on sale today. How did the RV industry get its start and how did we arrive where we’re at today? That is a long and interesting story, which is explored quite nicely in the video above.

Although the short documentary above is under ten minutes in length, it manages to cover multiple eras in the history of the RV. Those start in the early 1900s, when steel frames and wooden interiors were the norm. From there, it passes through the evolving landscape of the 1930s and 40s, which were defined by economic hardships and a global conflict unlike any other. The 1950s and 60s brought a post-war boom that led to a golden age of RV living, but was followed by three decades of opportunity and turmoil that included trade and oil embargoes, rising gas prices, and other challenges. Finally, we enter the modern era of today, which is farmed by startling technological advances, amazing interior designs, and the emergence of all-electric models that are currently redefining how we camp and travel.
