OnTarget Towing Tool is a Game-Changer for Equal-i-zer Hitch Owners

Device Sets Optimal Weight Distribution with Three Quick Measurements

RV owners who use an Original Equal-i-zer Sway Control Hitch to pull their travel trailers now have a new tool to assist in the set-up process. The company has introduced an electronic device called the OnTarget Towing Tool to quickly find the proper weight distribution settings through three simple measurements. The result is a smoother and safer ride both for the trailer and the tow vehicle.

Once activated, the OnTarget device immediately starts up in weight-distribution measurement mode. That process begins by taking the first of the three measurements when the truck and trailer are uncoupled. The second reading is made with the trailer attached to the hitch but without adjusting the weight distribution. The third—and final—measurement is completed after the trailer has been fully hitched and weight distribution is completed.

The OnTarget takes each measurement from inside the wheel well of a front tire on the tow vehicle. The device points a laser at a small target set on the ground nearby. When the red dot hits the bullseye, the operator presses a button to record the reading. That process is repeated for steps two and three as well.

With the three measurements obtained, the OnTarget uses a simple formula to calculate the current weight distribution. That number is displayed as a percentage, with the goal of scoring between 50-100%. If the results fall below that threshold, the manufacturer recommends that users redistribute the weight inside the trailer to compensate.

Having the weight properly balanced helps make towing a trailer much safer and more stable. The goal is to reduce the amount of trailer sway which results from high crosswinds, large trucks passing by, or having to make a sudden and unexpected maneuver. The video above perfectly demonstrates the role that proper weight distribution can play.
