Airstream to Offset Carbon Emissions from its RVs by Planting Trees
The Luxury RV Manufacturer Sets Its Sights on Carbon Neutrality.
Luxury RV manufacturer Airstream announced that it will fund tree planting in National Forests to neutralize estimated carbon emissions created by the driving of the company’s products in 2021. The company has dubbed this commitment “Caravan to Carbon Neutral” and will directly cover the cost of planting an estimated 118,405 trees by the National Forest Foundation.
The trees will offset carbon emissions generated by the first year of driving new Airstream travel trailers and touring coaches manufactured in 2021. The trees will also offset carbon emitted during the manufacturing and transportation of Airstreams from its production facility in Jackson Center, Ohio to dealerships nationwide.
Caravan to Carbon Neutral also includes a way for current and prospective Airstream owners to offset carbon emissions through the purchase of “Carbon Reduction Kits.” These kits, available in three levels: Silver, Gold, and Platinum, range in price from $50 to $250.
Purchasers of Carbon Reduction Kits will be recognized with custom decals that can be displayed on their trailer. The top tier plan covers the cost to plant 250 trees which will, together, sequester approximately 125 tons of carbon over the trees’ lives.
“The Airstream community has a symbiotic relationship with nature and the environment,” said Bob Wheeler, Airstream President and CEO. “This program brings an innovative solution to Airstreamers who want to neutralize their estimated carbon footprint from driving their Airstream and contribute to a more beautiful natural world.”
The “Caravan to Carbon Neutral” initiative is the first of several efforts by Airstream to reduce its overall environmental impact. Other efforts include offsetting electricity usage at its production facility in Jackson Center, Ohio with renewable energy credits purchased through Jackson Center Municipal Power’s EcoSmart Choice program.
In addition, Airstream vehicles are Certified Green by TRA Certification, Inc, a third-party rating based on resource consumption, energy efficiency, water efficiency, and indoor air quality during the manufacturing process.
