Moab, Utah

With Arches around the corner and Canyonlands a short drive away, this red-rock-surrounded valley is a required stop on Utah parks road trips. There’s plenty to explore beyond the parks too: try Bureau of Land Management trails like Grandstaff Canyon and Corona Arch. After a hike, green chile cheeseburgers at Milt’s Stop & Eat hit the spot. Downtown, stop by Gallery Moab for locally made art and Moab Made for locally crafted goods. The finest examples of the region’s unique style of rock art are preserved in Horseshoe Canyon on a 200-foot long wall called theGreat Gallery. More than thirty rust-red figures live on this canvas of sandstone, including the Holy Ghost panel, now reproduced in the MoMA in New York. To witness these relics, visitors must first drive two and a half hours and 30 miles on a graded dirt road, then complete a 7-mile, down-up trek into the canyon–a severe challenge no doubt, but your best path to understanding the ancestral artists as they were. For road conditions and other information, call park rangers at 435-719-2313.

Head east out to Emerald Bay State Park and hop in a kayak to take in Lake Tahoe’s spectacular blue-green water and gorgeous scenes of granite carved glaciers.
