Segway Muxi Pro E-Bike Review: Versatile, Affordable, and Tons of Fun
An urban crawler that’s perfect for just about everything, including daily commutes, running errands, and exploring new places.

Last year, we reviewed Segway’s Xafari e-bike, giving it high marks for its comfort, range, price, and many, many high-tech features. We did find its 92.5 lbs weight to be a bit unwieldy at times, but it quickly became one of our favorite electric bikes ever. Now, the e-mobility company has returned with a new model that delivers an even higher level of value than its predecessor, while carving out a personality all its own in the process. And perhaps best of all, the Segway Muxi Pro sets new standards for versatility and features, making it one of the most compelling new e-bike that we’ve seen in a long time.
It’s important to point out that the Muxi was originally announced back in January and became available to purchase in the spring. The Muxi Pro is an upgraded version of that bike that includes some key differences. For instance, the original Muxi is a single-speed bike, while the Pro model comes with a nine-speed drive train with electronic shifting and an automatic transmission mode (more on that later), as well as a front suspension, integrated turn signals, and both front and rear fenders as standard equipment. Each of those is a significant upgrade that gives the Muxi Pro some distinct advantages over the standard edition.

Segway Keeps Innovating
The first thing you’re likely to notice when you first set eyes on the Muxi, or its Pro variant, is its unique design. The bike features a step-through frame that makes getting on and off a breeze, while still providing plenty of comfort and support. The large 717Wh battery sits in the base of the frame itself, rather than on the downtube like most other e-bike models. This changes up the center of gravity, providing a stable, well-planted ride. A rear cargo rack also comes standard, as does a bright 600 lumen headlight, automatic brake lights, and integrated turn signals.
A 750W rear hub motor propels the Muxi Pro along, allowing it to hit speeds of up to 28 MPH when the bike’s Class 3 capabilities are unlocked using the Segway app. Out of the box, the Muxi Pro is in Class 2 mode, which limits speed to 20 MPH while utilizing six different levels of pedal assist. A thumb throttle, located on the handlebars, eliminates the need to pedal at all, although that does drain the bike’s battery at a faster pace.
The Muxi Pro rides on a set of 20” x 3” tires that offer a smooth, comfortable ride on a variety of surfaces. The front fork suspension—with 70mm of travel—further enhances the ride quality, and even gives the bike light off-road capabilities, although it feels more at home on pavement. A well-tuned traction-control system (TCS) ensures stability in wet, potentially slippery conditions, but can be toggled off when not needed as a way to conserve power.
Segway says the Muxi Pro gets 73 miles of range on a single charge, and that holds up under our testing. The usual disclaimer applies here, as the weight of the rider, riding style, type of terrain, and other variables all play a factor in how far you can go before you have to recharge the battery. That said, we easily saw 60+ miles of range on our test rides, even when switching freely between pedal-assist modes and even using the thumb throttle to get up some longer hills. Needless to say, the Muxi’s riding range did not disappoint.
The Muxi’s upright riding position and plush seat made our time on the bike very enjoyable, even on extended outings. As noted above, the Pro edition of the Muxi is equipped with a front suspension, which further smooths things out when rolling over rough roads. The result is an e-bike that is so fun and relaxing to use that you’ll be looking for excuses to take it out for a spin. Not that you’ll need much encouragement, as the bike’s versatile, utilitarian design makes it great for commuting to work, running errands, getting a workout, or just taking a leisurely ride with friends.

Warning: May Inspire Tech Envy
Like Segway’s first e-bike, the Xafari, the Muxi Pro is chock-full of high-tech features. Those include things like using the Segway app to turn the bike off and on, monitor the status of its battery, activate and adjust various features, and update the firmware. That app plays a central role in a Muxi owner’s life, providing a connection with customer support, troubleshooting assistance, and more. You can even use the app to activate the bike’s Airlock feature, which uses proximity sensors to detect when the owner is nearby, electronically unlocking the Muxi as a result. Conversely, it will also detect when the owner has moved out of range and will then auto-lock the bike and turn on its anti-theft system. When active, a very obvious alarm goes off whenever someone tries to move the bike without unlocking it first. It even sends an alert to the owner’s phone.
The Muxi Pro features several other handy anti-theft features, too. For instance, it allows owners to set a four-digit numeric password to unlock the bike before they ride. It also comes with GPS tracking and support for Apple’s Find My tech, which makes it easy for owners to locate their bike should it be tampered with or stolen. All of that provides excellent peace of mind, particularly when parking in an urban environment. And while we’d still recommend using a physical bike lock in such a setting, the Muxi isn’t an easy mark for would-be thieves.
But that’s all just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the Muxi Pro’s onboard technology. The bike also includes an array of other great features that further enhance the riding experience. For example, it has a hill start assist feature that makes getting started on a steep incline much easier. It also comes with hill descent control, which helps riders maintain a consistent, safe speed when going down those same steep grades. Adaptive pedal assist also automatically detects when the rider can use a little boost and provides extra power as needed, while the Muxi’s regenerative braking system feeds kinetic energy back into the battery to help extend riding range.

Electronic Shifting and Accessories
The included high-tech features extend to the Muxi Pro’s components and optional accessories, too. As noted above, the bike comes with a nine-speed drivetrain that uses electronic shifting, which is something I’ve only encountered on high-end traditional road and mountain bikes. This type of shifter does away with the cables and derailleur found on most bikes, replacing them instead with small motors that handle the transition between gears instantly and seamlessly. The process is smooth, fast, and precise, even when used under a heavy pedaling load.
The electronic shifters come with another trick up their sleeve that many riders will probably love. The system measures changes in cadence and speed and can automatically switch gears to accommodate the rider’s needs. In theory, this eliminates the need for you to even think about when to shift up or down based on the current riding conditions. As a long-time rider of traditional and e-bikes, I found that I preferred handling the shifting duties manually, but I suspect there will be plenty of Muxi Pro owners who will really appreciate this feature.
As for Muxi Pro accessories, in addition the usual options for adding cargo baskets and even a rear seat for a passenger, there are two other add-ons that particularly standout. Those include a dropper post, which allows the rider to drop the height of the seat for a lower center of gravity on a descent, then raise it back to the proper height when pedaling on flats or climbs. This is another feature that you typically only find on a high-end mountain bike, rather than a mid-range e-bike.
Segway also offers an accessory that adds rear-facing radar, which alerts riders to traffic approaching from behind. The device detects if a car is within 230 feet and activates a light on the handlebars and put an alert on the bike’s display. This is a safety feature that is becoming increasingly popular with road riders of all levels, improving awareness of their surroundings. To see it so neatly integrated into the Muxi ecosystem is impressive and continues to show how Segway continues to distance itself from the competition.

A New E-Bike Standard
At this point of the review, we’ve already gone on and on about how much we love the new Segway Muxi Pro. The bike is incredibly well designed and built and comes with a slew of amazing features that help it stand out from the crowd. We haven’t even mentioned its bright, crisp TFT display, built-in navigation feature, or its ability to sync ride metrics with a health and fitness app. There is just so much more to say about this bike, which is simply a joy to own and ride.
Normally, this is the part of the review where we tell you the things that we don’t necessarily like about an e-bike, but really there isn’t too much to say. At 73 lbs., we do wish it were a little lighter, but it certainly isn’t the heaviest model we’ve tested. Segway also rates the bike for riders that are between 4’ 8” to 6’ in height, so at 6’ 2” I felt a little constrained even with the seat set to the highest position. That means, taller riders will have to look elsewhere, although everyone else will be more than fine.
That’s it. Those are our only two—admittedly minor—complaints about this otherwise fantastic bike. And, we haven’t even gotten to the best part yet, the price. The Muxi Pro has an MSRP of $1,999.99, which feels like a real bargain when you consider everything it brings to the table. The sub-$2000 e-bike market has become incredibly crowded and competitive in recent years, but you’ll be hard-pressed to find any other model that offers the level of value that you’ll find here. Simply put, if you’re in the market for a versatile e-bike for commuting, running errands, or just cruising around town, this should be at the very top of your list. Nothing else matches it in terms of features, build quality, integrated tech, and available accessories.
