So, you want to buy an RV? Great choice! But, now what? Where do you go from here? An RV can be a major purchase (often the second-largest investment you’ll make, behind your residential home), so it’s important to keep a few things in mind before you decide to lay down your hard-earned cash. Following a few simple tips rooted heavily in common sense will help ensure your foray into RV ownership is easy and enjoyable.
Budget
With extended terms up to 20 years, lower monthly payments make owning an RV affordable. Be sure to budget to cover the expense of your RV ownership; apart from the initial sticker price, you will be required to carry insurance on the RV, and possibly need to store it when you’re not using it. And don’t forget about essential accessories, from sewer hoses to hitch equipment to braking devices and the like. Crunch the numbers and allow yourself some room each month. The typical down payment for an RV purchase is 10–20%, so be sure to work that into your plans. Putting a chunk of money aside on each payday adds up quickly.
Pro Tip
Already own a capable tow vehicle? That can save you tens of thousands of dollars if you decide to get a suitable towable RV (pop-up, travel trailer, or fifth wheel) or pickup camper.

Credit Score
It goes without saying, everybody should have a solid idea of their credit score. There are apps available to check, and many banks/credit card companies have the option to enroll in some sort of credit monitoring. The higher your credit score, the better chance you’ll be able to obtain the most competitive interest rate (we’ll get to that), and the lower your monthly payment may be.
Research
Before even stepping foot in a lot, do plenty of research online, on the phone, or however you prefer. When you do hit the dealership, some salespeople may apply pressure on you even if you’re just browsing, and it can be difficult when they start throwing numbers at you that you may not be comfortable with. Hold firm and stick to your budget.
Pro Tip
Camping World RV centers are the perfect choice to browse for new RVs and products and offer no-pressure shopping with a network of highly trained professionals who will answer all of your questions. It’s important to see the RV you’ll be purchasing and open drawers, kick the tires and get a better idea of the craftsmanship and quality. Take your time and find one that’s just right.

Credit Terms
Once you’ve found the perfect RV for you, it’s time to discuss terms. Many dealers have in-house financing sources, so be sure they work for you. And, armed with your down payment, a strong credit score, and a clear sense of what you can afford, you may even be able to negotiate better terms or a lower price on your purchase. It never hurts to ask.
Pro Tip
Whether you are buying an RV from Camping World or from a private party, Good Sam Finance Center offers low rates and sensible terms to help customers make the most of their purchase. Good Sam Finance Center will work with you to help you follow your RV dreams.
After the Sale
Once you’ve made your purchase, pay close attention during the walk-through, and be sure to ask any questions. We recommend staying in your RV close to home (or in your driveway) for the maiden voyage; some dealers will even allow you to stay on the lot in designated RV sites. That way, if you find you need a particular item, it’s never too far away. Once you’ve performed a few practice runs, you’re ready to hit the open road.
Rest assured, if you want to buy an RV, you can! And Camping World and Good Sam Finance Center are here to help. See you at the campsite.
