GMC and EarthCruiser are Building an Electric RV Together

The Two Companies are Working on an Off-Road Overlanding Vehicle Based on the Hummer EV

In January, off-road RV manufacturer EarthCruiser announced it was designing a lightweight slide-in camper specifically made for electric pickups. At the time, the company also hinted that it was exploring other opportunities to enter the e-RV space. Now, it seems those plans are already coming to fruition, thanks to a budding partnership with GMC.

In a press release issued a few days back, GMC and EarthCruiser boldly proclaim that they are collaborating to “shape the future of overlanding.” The two companies plan to do that by leveraging their strengths to produce zero-emission vehicles that are also highly capable off-road.

GMC entered the EV space by introducing the Hummer EV in 2021. It has also announced a Hummer EV pickup and the Sierra EV Denali truck, both of which are slated for release in early 2024. Those vehicles will serve as the platform for the new e-RV designed and built in partnership with EarthCruiser.

EarthCruiser brings years of experience creating some of the most capable off-road vehicles on the planet. Its products can go just about anywhere, earning the company a legendary reputation in the overlanding space. It is relatively new to the EV market, however, and partnering with GMC will help both brands leverage each other’s strengths.

“GMC has long been a leader in professional-grade trucks with 100-plus years of uncompromising pickup capability, luxury and driver control,” GM executive chief engineer of Battery Electric Trucks Josh Tavel says. “We had an instant connection with EarthCruiser — a leader in the overland community — and their similar vision to accelerate the zero-tailpipe-emissions future. EarthCruiser products have proven their performance in environments around the world and we’re excited to join them on this next chapter of adventure and exploration.”

Exactly what form this new electric RV will take remains to be seen. The two companies have only released a single image so far, with most of the details shrouded in shadows. It does show the body of a Hummer EV with what appear to be solar panels on the roof. Beyond that, there isn’t much more to share just yet, although GMC and EarthCruiser promise to reveal more soon. The GMC Hummer EV overland concept will officially make its debut in late summer 2023.

“From the Australian Outback to the Alaskan wilderness and everywhere in between, an EarthCruiser was made to tackle tough terrain,” says EarthCruiser CEO and Founder Lance Gillies in the press release. “As we consider the future of overlanding, we are continuing to look toward key technologies like electrification that will help us explore for decades to come. Electrification presents exciting opportunities for overland use, such as precise torque control over terrain and ease-of-use, in addition to zero-tailpipe emissions. We’re thrilled to be working with GM’s team of top-tier EV engineers and look to develop an overland vehicle that’s truly made for, and will define, the future of this industry.”

Stay tuned for more information on this exciting new vehicle coming later this year.
