When Airstream first launched its Rangeline camper van way back in 2022, it was hailed as an affordable option for anyone looking to join the swelling ranks of vanlifers across the country. The Class B model was the company’s first coach built on the Ram ProMaster platform, which allowed it to hit the market with a very affordable price point. Since then, the rig has received a few modest updates, but has mostly remained largely unchanged. But with the arrival of the all-new Airstream Rangeline 21PL today, all of that changes, as the RV manufacturer reaffirms its commitment to the line in a big way.

Like the original Rangeline—which now carries the 21PS (Premier Suite) designation—the 21PL (Powered Loft) rides on a ProMaster chassis. This gives the van a 3.6L V6 engine that produces 276 horsepower and 250 lb-ft of torque. Ram’s van platform is currently limited to front-wheel drive only, but Airstream has outfitted the 21PL with an upgraded suspension that smooths out the driving experience by maintaining a level stance, minimizing body roll, and absorbing harsh impacts from the road.

Inside, the Rangeline 21PL departs from its sibling significantly. The new model is a lofted floor plan, with the bed now mounted on a powered lift that bring added convenience and versatility. During the day, the bed raises to the ceiling, creating a more open and spacious living area. At night, the bed drops down to form a comfortable primary sleep space with plenty of head room. The bed itself features a plush 4” memory foam mattress and has a north-south orientation that provides extra space for taller campers.

One of the most interesting new features of the 21PL layout is the addition of what Airstream calls the Smartbench. This two-seat bench sits adjacent to the couch, which runs along the camp side interior wall. Together, they form a large lounge with plenty of seating for passengers. But the bench is an independent module that’s connected to L-track sliders integrated in the floor, allowing it to move forward and backward to create more cargo space. It can also be removed altogether to create a massive cargo bay with room for bikes, kayaks, or other outdoor gear. The Smartbench even folds flat, creating a second bed for guests.

The coach includes a galley kitchen with a single-burner portable induction cooktop, a stainless steel sink, a 12V mini-fridge, and a surprising amount of counter space. The onboard wet bath comes with a shower, toilet, and sink, along with integrated storage for toiletries. A 13.5k BTU air conditioner with built-in soft start keeps the cabin cool when traveling in hot weather, while a hydronic heating system takes the chill off when the mercury starts to drop. The Rangeline’s insulated walls and ceiling, working in conjunction with a roof ventilator, add further climate control, while dual skylights allow natural light to filter into the cabin.

As with most Airstream RVs, the Rangeline 21PL ships with a modern power system designed to make life on the road and the campsite as comfortable as possible. The coach comes with a 3.5kWh lithium house battery, a 3000W inverter, and 200W of solar on the roof. If that isn’t enough to support your off-grid adventures, Airstream even throws in a 2.8kW gas generator that pulls fuel from the main gas tank rather than requiring its own separate fuel supply. All of these systems work seamlessly with one another, offering plenty of power to meet all of the rig’s needs.

“We took everything owners loved about our original Rangeline and added features to offer greater standard sleeping capacity, more storage solutions, and freedom for owners to customize their travel,” said Airstream President and CEO Bob Wheeler in a press release announcing the new coach. “Rangeline 21PL adapts to everyday life on the road, whether that’s hauling gear, hosting family, or having a more comfortable place to rest, without limiting quality design and comfort.”
