The Aboard Travel Trailer is an Electric RV with a Twist

While still a relatively small subset of the RV industry, the all-electric travel trailer category has grown nicely over the past few years. Lightship was first to announce its high-tech towable, followed closely by Pebble, which offered cutting edge technology of its own. More recently, we’ve seen startup Sky Dream RV throw its hat in the ring, promising three new models with the first coming later this year and the Evotrex PG-5 is on track for a similar release. Now, you can add the Aboard travel trailer to that list, although this newcomer is taking a slightly different approach to helping owners camp off-grid.

The California-based startup recently came out of stealth as part of a $13 million funding round. That seed money is meant to set it up for a production run later this year, with the first models of the Aboard travel trailer rolling off the assembly line in Q4 2026. That seems like an ambitious schedule for such a new brand, but it seems committed to that timetable. We’ll see if those aggressive plans come to fruition or if deliveries will be pushed into next year instead.

Regardless, there is a lot to get excited about with this new RV. For starters, it uses a hybrid electrical system that features a 41kWh onboard battery pack to power its appliances, lighting, and other systems. But while most of its competitors come with large solar panel installations on the roof, the Aboard designers elected to go a different way when it comes to replenishing its power supply. The rig includes a 50kW range-extending generator that recharges the batteries from 20% to 80% in about 30 minutes. That gives it a total of 200kWh of power, allowing it to stay off-grid for up to seven days at a time.

The travel trailer measures 23’ 8” in length and has a GVWR of 7,500 lbs. That makes it towable by a wide range of vehicles, including larger SUVs and pickup trucks. But the RV comes with its own electric motors, which helps extend the range of the tow vehicle, whether it is gas-powered or an EV. An electro-mechanical braking system helps maintain stability and control on the road, while the trailer itself can automatically hitch and unhitch through the use of an app.

The exterior of the Aboard is sleek and modern looking, with large windows, external lighting, and a powered awning. The rear of the trailer features a split tailgate that opens to provide generous access to the interior, making it easy to load and unload cargo. The tailgate even serves as a small deck, allowing a better connection with the surrounding environment.

Inside, the Aboard is just as modern and comfortable as you would expect. A U-shaped dinette is found at the front of the trailer, while a lounge space occupies the rear, just inside the tailgate/deck. The kitchen is located midship and includes a range of electric appliances, including an induction stove, microwave, refrigerator, and sink. The onboard bathroom is cleverly tucked away behind the kitchen, and includes a toilet, shower, and sink. At night, the lounge and dinette convert into beds, with room to comfortably sleep four.

The travel trailers’ expansive windows allow plenty of natural light into the interior and provide amazing views of the surrounding landscape. Those same windows are heavily tinted to provide privacy and maintain climate control. An air conditioner with a heat pump maintains comfort for 3+ season use. That same heat pump offers instant hot water for the sinks and shower. Large holding tanks (52-gallon fresh, 35-gallon grey, and 30-gallon black) further enable off-grid exploration.

Right now, Aboard is in the prototyping and testing phase, with the hopes of ramping up in time to meet the Q4 production window. Final pricing for the travel trailer has yet to be revealed, but is expected to be around $80,000, which would be substantially less expensive than the competition. Prospective owners can preorder a rig of their own right now with a simple $100 deposit, which will put them on the waiting list for when the RV eventually starts shipping.
