Voluntary Crash Standards Announced

Originally Published in Trailer Life Magazine

Dr. Jeffery W. Runge, administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration,
meeting with automakers in Washington this week, announced that vehicle manufacturers would
establish voluntary standards to make autos safer when hit by a larger vehicle. They will
also work to make sport-utility vehicles and pickup trucks less dangerous. Industry
insiders believe that the standards may lead to greater use of airbag devices, plus more
structural reinforcements. The standards are also likely to lead to the lowering of SUVs
and pickups so that their front ends are less likely to ride up over a car in a crash.
