Yokohama and Sumitomo have introduced tires made with far less petroleum. Sumitomo has
announced development of a “petroleum-free tire,” the Dunlop ENASAVE ES801. It claims to
reduce petroleum content by 46 percent by substituting natural rubber, silica, vegetable
oils and vegetable fibers. Yokohama’s new compound, Super Nanopower Rubber, uses natural
rubber with citrus oil, which reduces petroleum content 80 percent. The SNR will be used on
the Decibel Super E-Spec, launching in Japan later this year; a sale date for the United
States has not been set. Yokohama and Sumitomo also claim their new tires have 18 and 30
percent less rolling resistance, respectively.
