Tire System Curbs Major Crashes

Originally Published in Trailer Life Magazine

Tire blowouts and flats are some of the leading causes of deaths on roadways. According to
the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there are more than 23,000
tire-related accidents every year; 535 of them are fatal. Until now, drivers have had no
control over the loss of tire pressure, flats or blowouts. A revolutionary new tire system,
called the PAX System, is changing that and giving drivers safe alternatives to traditional
tires. The most fundamental difference between traditional tire-and-wheel assemblies and
the PAX System is that the PAX System tire never separates from the rim, even with the
occurrence of a sudden flat at high speeds under normal driving conditions. The inner
support ring also offers maneuverability and control in the event of a blowout. An on-board
monitoring system allows drivers to monitor PAX System tire pressure and instantly alerts
the driver to changes in tire pressure. NHTSA has proposed a rule that, by September 2007,
tire-pressure monitoring systems similar to ones used with the PAX System will be required
on all new vehicles. PAX System tires can run for 125 miles at 55 mph after a flat or
blowout. Developed and patented by Michelin, the PAX System has been licensed to competing
tire manufacturers, including Pirelli, Goodyear, Sumitomo and Toyo.
