After a federal appeals court voided the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s
(NHTSA) 2002 tire pressure monitoring system rule, NHTSA wrote a revised notice of proposed
rulemaking to reinstate the tire-pressure monitoring system regulation. Direct systems are
considered by the court to be most effective because they are continuous and monitor each
tire. Indirect tire pressure monitors are tied in with anti-lock braking systems, and the
sensors detect low tire pressure by measuring differences in rotational speed at each
wheel. The new notice is expected to be published later this year.
