On the lookout for a nice entry-level towable with no frills but with enough essentials to let a family of first-time RVers enjoy hitting the road, we checked out the Sonoma 19FQ.

Centered against the forward wall is the queen bed (hence the FQ designation), with ample walking space on either side of the bed along with a pair of functional night tables with drawers and overhead wardrobes. Rated to sleep four, with two on the queen bed and two on the convertible dinette, the trailer should handle a small family’s needs without much fuss. Interior access to the forward pass-through storage is available by lifting the trailing edge of the queen bed — very helpful if stored items are needed after shutting down for the night. A privacy curtain for those sleeping in the queen bed would have been a nice addition — but as is, nothing separates the bedroom from the living area.

The galley is simple and equipped with a three-burner stove and oven. The 6-cubic foot Norcold refrigerator is big enough to keep perishables cold and fresh for the duration. Across from the galley is a dinette with room for four and overhead storage, including a space for the TV. This trailer had the optional Value Package ($1,200) — about the only factory option available — which includes a 13,500-BTU BriskAire air conditioner, a microwave oven, a TV antenna and a patio awning.

The storage cabinet located over the sink is shallow enough to make it comfortable to handle dishes, yet deep enough for most boxed-food staples such as cereal and crackers. There is also ample light under the cabinet and ventilation from the galley window to help keep food preparation and cleanup enjoyable.

While checking out the build quality of the cabinets, I was pleased to find a recessed spice rack that runs the width of the double-basin stainless-steel sink, plus three drawers and a large single-door storage area that can house the trash bag and cleaning supplies. Properly designed galley storage is one of the important elements to check out when looking into a smaller travel trailer, and the Sonoma 19FQ delivers.

The rear bathroom has an abbreviated, yet usable, tub at the base of the streetside shower enclosure, and features a residential-size sink with storage underneath and a mirrored medicine cabinet on the rear wall. The toilet offers plenty of legroom and there’s a floor-to-ceiling wardrobe/storage unit curbside.

The 19FQ has a 7,200-pound gross vehicle weight rating (gvwr) and an advertised hitch weight of 425 pounds, which makes it a good fit to tow behind the family SUV or pickup for a nice weekender with the kids.
