The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is working on several test
methods for scientifically determining the durability of tires over time. NHTSA has found
that it is difficult to establish a uniform time limit because of variable aging factors
such as climate, handling, and storage conditions. Several safety advocate groups and auto
manufacturers are calling for a six-year tire expiration date. NHTSA must report its
tire-durability test findings and recommendations to Congress by this August.
