Fifth-wheel trailers offer many RV lifestyle alternatives such as touring, long-term stays
or merely spot-camping with friends and family. But where do prospective fifth-wheelers
begin, and what type of rig would best suit their needs? A worthy candidate is Holiday
Rambler’s 2006 Savoy 28SL model. Most would consider the Savoy to be an entry-level
product, which should make these attractive units relatively affordable choices for
first-timers, or those who just want a good bargain. The RLS floorplan sports a front,
non-slide bedroom with a queen bed placed in a fore-and-aft configuration, followed in the
same general cabin by a bathroom consisting of a streetside wash stand, a corner shower and
a private curbside water closet. Stepping down a level and moving farther back, the rear
area boasts a mid-way curbside galley, a streetside dinette and rear living-room space that
has been expanded with a streetside slideout. Another favorable aspect of owning this unit
is that it has a wet weight of 8,225 pounds and can be towed by a broad cross section of
full-size pickups without exceeding their towing capacity and, at a bit more than 30 feet
in length, the Savoy is much easier to cut around town in than a 38- or 40-foot behemoth.
This floorplan and its furnishings are tailor-made for hosting guests. This is attested to
by the existence of extra sleeping arrangements provided by the convertible sofa bed in the
living room, and fold-down capabilities of the streetside dinette, which can accommodate a
smaller sleeper or two. When it comes time to feed the crew, the well-proportioned curbside
galley has all the essentials necessary for efficient meal preparation, including an
overhead microwave and a three-burner stove and gas oven. Primary sleeping accommodations
in the forward bedroom compartment are comfortable, though in this unit, there is not full
stand-up head space in the immediate area surrounding the queen bed. Capable of being
pulled by a wide array of full-sized pickups, the Savoy is just right for a family with
kids, or for a couple who enjoys the flexibility of extra facilities for the occasional
