The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has proposed regulations to keep
certain safety data on consumer complaints, warranty claims, and information on vehicles
involved in deaths and injuries secret. NHTSA said its proposal would include certain
production numbers, consumer complaints, warranty claims and field reports. Manufacturers
have complained that releasing such information could be anti-competitive. The last six
digits of vehicle identification numbers of vehicles in death and injury reports would also
be kept from the public to protect privacy.
