President Bush Signs Energy Bill

Originally Published in Trailer Life Magazine

The Energy Independence and Security Act was signed by President Bush on December 19, after
having been adopted by the House of Representatives. According to the administration, the
bill will “…make a major step toward reducing our dependence on oil, confronting global
climate change, expanding production of renewable fuels and giving future generations a
nation that is stronger, cleaner and more secure.” The new bill set higher fuel-mileage
regulations for cars and light trucks, the first change in 32 years. It also calls for
production of 36-billion gallons of renewable fuels by 2022, up nearly 500 percent over
current ethanol production. In addition, the bill sets efficiency standards for appliances
and government buildings, and the elimination of incandescent light bulbs within a decade.
