Obama Orders Halt on Road Development in Remote Areas

Originally Published in Trailer Life Magazine

The Obama administration has called for a freeze on most road-building and other
development on about 50 million acres of remote national forests. The goal is to preserve
the pristine roadless areas of our nation by banning new logging and development. The
Clinton administration began a Roadless Area Conservation Rule in 2001, which protected
close to 60 million acres of national forest land from development. Then the Bush
administration exempted large areas from protections, which included parts of the Tongass,
and it gave states the authority to petition to set their own development rules. But
Obama’s reinstatement of the ban will, for the meanwhile, take precedence over each state’s
attempt to undercut it.
