NTSB Calls for Black Boxes

Originally Published in Trailer Life Magazine

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) proposed in June that vehicles
built after September 1, 2008, meet minimum standards for Event Data Recorders (EDRs) —
also known as black boxes — voluntarily installed by automakers. Now the National
Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has called for NHTSA to make EDRs mandatory for
passenger vehicles. Approximately 15 percent of the vehicles now on the road have one, and
between 65 percent and 90 percent of 2004 vehicles have some sort of recording ability.
These EDRs could record speed, seat-belt use, braking and airbag deployment.
