NHTSA Investigating Ford Expeditions

Originally Published in Trailer Life Magazine

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened an investigation of
an estimated 437,000 Ford Expedition sport-utility vehicles, after receiving reports of
suspension problems. NHTSA launched a preliminary analysis in July after receiving
complaints about failing front stabilizer bar links in 1997 and 1998 Expeditions.
Expeditions are popular tow vehicles with substantial tow ratings. Stabilizer or sway bars
help keep the vehicle from leaning excessively in a sharp turn. No crashes or injuries were
reported in any of the complaints. Stabilizer link failures happen more often in Snow Belt
states where road salts are used to melt ice.
