News Briefs: Navistar, EPA, Incentives

Navistar Builds Last 7.3-Liter Power Stroke Navistar, builder of the
7.3-liter diesel engine marketed by Ford as a Power Stroke in its truck line, assembled the
last one on October 15, 2002. Production will be switched over to the new more-powerful
6.0-liter diesel, which will replace the 7.3-liter models. EPA Calls for
Zero-Emission Vehicles
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is about to
approve a regulation similar to California’s controversial law, which requires major
automakers to sell up to 10 percent zero-emission (electric) vehicles. Similar legislation
is being considered in Massachusetts. Incentives:

  • DaimlerChrysler’s Chrysler Group has announced it will compete with GM and Ford in
    the zero-percent financing wars for 2003 models. Some rebates have been boosted, and
    about two dozen models will get zero-percent financing for terms of less than 60
    months. Both GM and Ford have announced zero-percent financing on 2003 models as
    well.
  • Ford has announced it will boost its incentive plans by including 2003 models in
    its three-year zero-percent financing plan. The latest incentive programs go to the end
    of 2002.
  • General Motors recently announced that it won’t eliminate its zero-percent
    incentives anytime soon. However, GM is coming out with numerous new products during
    the next several years; this may allow the company to cut incentives.
