The Bush Administration is expected to sign into law new fuel-mileage regulations.
The
National Highway Transportation Safety Administration is reported to be reviewing proposed
legislation that would apply standards for large SUVs, but would continue to exempt pickup
trucks. Current regulations require automakers to meet a fleet average of 22.2 miles per
gallon by 2007.
The new proposed system would require trucks in the smallest segment to
average 28.4 mpg by 2011; the larger truck segment would need to meet a 21.3 mpg
requirement, with pickups exempted.
