New Mexico Considers Breathalyzers

Originally Published in Trailer Life Magazine

New Mexico may be the first state to require drivers to install alcohol-detection devices
on their cars to determine their fitness to drive.

New Mexico’s House of Representatives
has passed a bill that would mandate ignition locks that would prevent an engine from
starting, if the driver’s breath exceeded the legal alcohol limit.

New Mexico has one of
the highest rates of alcohol-related driving fatalities in the nation. If passed, the locks
would be required on all vehicles sold or registered in New Mexico by 2009.
