Light-Truck Tires Must Meet Stiffer Rules

Originally Published in Trailer Life Magazine

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has announced that, starting in
2007, tires used on light trucks (including pickups, SUVs and minivans) will have to meet
the same standards as tires used on passenger cars.

In addition to eliminating differences
between truck and car tire-test regulations, NHTSA made the tire rules more stringent and
boosted the minimum performance standards for underinflated tires.

NHTSA estimates that
more than 10 percent of today’s tires might fail the new tests that become law in 2007.
