Plaintiff’s lawyers in a class-action lawsuit want Firestone to extend its tire recall to
those made at its Wilson, North Carolina, plant, in addition to Decatur, Illinois.
Plaintiffs also want Firestone to provide consumers with tires that have nylon caps. If a
federal judge agrees, Firestone would have to replace every one of the 6.5 million recalled
tires, plus extend the recall to other tires. Firestone already replaced more than 5.8
million, or about 90 percent, of the recalled tires. Bridgestone/Firestone says the
requests were unnecessary. A hearing for a preliminary injunction may be held in March
2001.
