Jeep Considers Grand Cherokee Problems

Originally Published in Trailer Life Magazine

Jeep announced that, after an extensive investigation, it has not found any mechanical or
manufacturing problems to explain 506 complaints of Jeep Grand Cherokees suddenly jumping
into reverse. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has received
reports of 59 injuries and three deaths from the vehicle suddenly shifting into reverse.
The Jeeps were built between 1995 and 1999. Jeep said it believes two of the deaths were
not linked in any way with the transmission complaints. Jeep suggested that driver error
could have been a factor in some of the complaints. NHTSA opened a preliminary evaluation
into the 1995-1999 Grand Cherokee in July.
