Chrysler and Freightliner are developing hybrid-power using a Mercedes-Benz diesel engine
for Fed-Ex trucks. This project could lead to hybrid powertrains for the entire DC line of
vehicles.
The hybrid diesel has been tested on the road and could be running next year in
FedEx pickups. Engineers estimate that a hybrid diesel could reduce fuel consumption by up
to 50 percent per mile. A Mercedes diesel engine also will power the 2005 Jeep Liberty SUV.
