Habitat for Humanity International volunteers typically pack their hammers and drive their
RVs to locations across the United States and Canada to build homes for families in need.
But this year, for the first time since the Habitat RV Care-A-Vanners program was founded
in 1989, volunteers planned an overseas trip to New Zealand.
They didn’t ship their rigs
across the Pacific to participate in the first overseas program. Instead, they paid $3,000
per person for round-trip airfare, RV rental, campground fees, several meals, visits to
attractions and a donation to the Habitat office in New Zealand.
The Habitat RV
Care-A-Vanners program is open to RV owners who can spend six to 12 weeks helping local
Habitat affiliate chapters build and, in some cases, renovate homes for families in need.
RV Care-A-Vanners must be financially able to travel to the project site, cover personal
expenses while there and use their RV as temporary living quarters.
