General Motors has announced details of its updated Duramax V-8 turbodiesel engine for
2007. The new 6.6L Duramax is equipped with a soot-reducing diesel particulate filter (DPF)
as part of its emission system.
The Duramax, along with all other 2007 diesel engines, is
designed to run on ultra-low-sulfur diesel (ULSD) fuel, which becomes available nationwide
on October 15. The upgrades will allow the engine to meet new U.S. EPA-mandated Tier-2
emissions standards for medium-duty diesel engines manufactured after January 1.
Other
upgrades include new electronic controls; a variable geometry turbocharger; an improved EGR
system, strengthened block, cylinder heads and internal components; higher fuel-injection
pressure; new seven-hole injectors; independently controlled glow plugs for faster startup;
and a larger cooling system.
