General Motors’ brand count may drop from eight to four by 2012, according to a
restructuring plan GM gave to the congress. Surviving brands would be Buick, Cadillac,
Chevrolet and GMC, with Pontiac becoming a “specialty” brand within the Buick-Pontiac-GMC
group. GM may sell the Saab brand and “explore alternatives for the Saturn brand.” GM plans
to substantially change its product mix during the next four years and introduce
“predominantly high-mileage, energy-efficient cars and crossovers” including plug-in
electrics, gasoline-electric hybrids and fuel cell vehicles.
