Ford will offer a new 6.0-liter Power Stroke diesel option next spring in F-series Super
Duty pickups and Excursion sport-utility vehicles. The engine is rated at 325 hp and 550
lb-ft of torque at 2,000 rpm, which is higher than any existing pickup diesels, and should
be a boon to trailerists. A new five-speed automatic transmission option will also be
available.
It is said that the new engine will produce 10 percent better fuel economy and
20 percent lower emissions. An electronically controlled turbocharger with variable vanes
and four valves per cylinder will improve efficiency. A “pilot” fuel-injection system will
inject a tiny amount of fuel prior to the main injection pulse to reduce combustion noise.
A V-6 version of the engine may also be used in upcoming Ford light trucks and SUVs around
the 2007 model year.
