Public tours are being offered at Ford’s historic River Rouge plant in
Dearborn, Michigan. Ever since Ford discontinued tours there about 25
years ago, there was no longer a place for Detroit visitors to see new
vehicles being built there.
Visitors, limited to 75 per tour, can now enter two theaters to
watch a pair of films. The first film is historic with archival footage,
and the second is an “Art of Manufacturing” film with shaking floors
and loud factory noises. The Assembly Plant Walking Tour allows visitors
to walk across a one-third-mile-long balcony that overlooks the
assembly line for the F-Series truck. There’s also a museum of Rouge
products, including the one-millionth Ford, a Model A; a 1932 V-8; a
1949 coupe; a 1956 Thunderbird; a 1965 Mustang; and a 2005 Ford F-150.
