DaimlerChrysler has unveiled a unique “active” night-vision system on a Jeep Grand
Cherokee. The system enhances night vision and makes driving in low light safer, especially
for older drivers with poor night vision. Two special lights illuminate the road with
infrared light. Then a digital camera records the image, and an infrared image is projected
onto a display behind the instrument cluster. The system is said to detect objects up to
500 feet in front of the vehicle. Since infrared lights are invisible to the human eye,
they do not distract oncoming drivers.
