Cummins Inc. recently announced that it has selected the Columbus,
Indiana, engine plant as the production facility for its new family of
light-duty, clean-diesel engines, which the company plans to begin
manufacturing. Preparations for the manufacturing lines are scheduled to
begin in mid-2007.
DaimlerChrysler is said to be the major customer for this engine,
which will be designed to power vehicles below 8,500 pounds gross
vehicle weight. It is rumored that a Dodge Ram 1500 may be offered with
it, along with perhaps Dakota pickups and/or Durango SUVs.
