Child-Seat Safety Exams Offered

Originally Published in Trailer Life Magazine

Auto crashes are a leading cause of death for American children. The
issue is especially prevalent in minority communities, where lack of
safety education and money make proper child seats hard to come by. The
National Safe Kids Campaign is working to help provide seats and educate
communities.

As part of the Head Start program, Safe Kids has provided more
than 100,000 free safety seats across the country. However, with four
out of every five child-safety seats installed improperly, providing the
seats isn’t enough. That’s why Safe Kids has also organized checkup
centers where parents are invited to have their child-safety seats
examined free of charge.

Statistics show that minority groups are at greater risk for not
putting children into safety seats. In the African-American community in
particular, automobile accidents are the No. 1 killer of children under
the age 14. That’s why minority communities are especially encouraged
to attend a checkup event.

There are more than 300 Safe Kids coalitions in the United States,
conducting nearly 3,000 checkup events a year. To find the next one in
your area, call (800) 441-1888.
