NHTSA Rates Rollover Potential
The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA)
has reported rollover testing results. Among 2006 models, 39 SUVs
representing 42 percent of the vehicles tested earned four out of five
stars. (Five stars is the highest rating.) In 2005, only 34 percent of
SUVs tested received four stars.
GM Cancels Hummer H1
General Motors has announced that the Hummer H1 will be dropped
from its model line at the end of the 2006 model run this summer. GM
only sold about 12,000 H1s total, which retail for about $140,000, and
the company only sold 100 so far this year.
Texas Raising Limits to 80 MPH?
The Texas Department of Transportation (DOT) is proposing that
sections of Interstate 10 and 20 in west Texas raise speed limits to 80
mph. The state’s DOT says that most drivers already are traveling near
the proposed speed limit. The last 80-mph speed limits in the United
States were eliminated in 1974, before 55 mph became the law.
