GM, Daimler-Chrysler Work on Hybrids

General Motors and Daimler-Chrysler announced they will jointly
work on hybrid drivetrains for their vehicles. GM plans to develop its
two-mode full hybrid technology for cars, trucks and SUVs.
Daimler-Chrysler, which has been a leader in developing hydrogen
technology, hasn’t announced what part it intends to play in the joint
venture.

Ford to Offer a Stretch-Pedition?

A stretched version of Ford’s Expedition reportedly will be
offered in the 2007 model year — as much as 16 inches longer than the
standard version. Several engines are rumored to be available, including
a V-6 diesel, and an optional 6.2-liter V-8 dubbed Hurricane may be
offered for either the 2008 or 2009 model year.

Chrysler Recalls Minivans

Chrysler may recall approximately 240,000 minivans because of a
radio problem. An electrical short caused by water leaking into the
radios has resulted in nine reported fires in the affected vehicles.
Dodge Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country minivans from the
2001-2002 model years are involved. Repairs will be done for free.

Hummer H2 Being Probed by NHTSA

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is
studying a possible safety problem with the 2003-2004 Hummer H2. Four
owners have reported a break in their vehicle’s steering knuckle,
leading to a loss of control. In three of the four cases, the loss of a
wheel occurred. GM reports that approximately 60,000 of the vehicles are
on the road.
