BMW has announced the first details of its new X3 SUV, the second model
of what BMW calls its “Sports Activity Vehicles,” which should go into
production late this year. The X3, smaller than the BMW X5, is more in
the same range as vehicles like Ford’s Escape.

The first engine available in the X3 is likely to be the 230-hp
inline six-cylinder 3.0-liter gas engine. Six-speed manual gearboxes and
a five-speed automatic should be offered. BMW is also launching its new
four-wheel-drive system called xDrive. According to BMW it is claimed
to offer substantial improvements in stability, driving pleasure and
safety.

Prices have not yet been announced, but they should be in the
neighborhood of $40,000 for the base model. Tow ratings have not yet
been released.
