BMW plans to introduce two new diesel models: the X5 xDrive35d SUV
and the 335d sedan. Both will be powered by a turbocharged 3.0-liter
inline six-cylinder diesel engine rated at 265 hp and 425 lb-ft of
torque.
The new diesels feature variable twin turbos with a torque peak at
a low 1,750 rpm, which is excellent for towing. They get about 25
percent better mileage than similar-size gas engines.
A urea aftertreatment system, similar to Mercedes’ Bluetec, will
allow them to meet strict emission regulations and be sold in all 50
states later in 2008.
