During the Civil War, towns and villages in northern Maryland were divided in their
loyalties to North or South. Families were bitterly separated. Now, visitors to Frederick
County hike and camp in parkland, shop for antiques and visit Civil War and recreational
attractions. Serene natural beauty attracted Franklin Delano Roosevelt to the county’s
Catoctin Mountains, where he founded what was to become Camp David, the presidential
retreat.
