Welcome to the Great Outdoors

Originally Published in MotorHome Magazine

Remember when you were still in high school? By the time June rolled
around the Summer Solstice — the “official” first day of summer — was
still nearly a month away, but, you probably spent more time gazing out
the window than staring at schoolbooks.

Now, a presidential proclamation has recognized what we’ve known all
along: June has been designated Great Outdoors Month. The “month”
actually stretches from the end of May — and National Safe Boating Week
— into early July, but June itself is filled with activities ranging
from Family Recreation Week to Clean Beaches Week.

Other scheduled pursuits include Great Outdoors Week; Fishing
and Boating Week; a week celebrating National and Historic Trails; a
weeklong Smithsonian Folklife Festival on the National Mall in
Washington, D.C.; and Bike Virginia — not officially a “week,” but a
five-day cycling tour of the Old Dominion State.

Planning for Great Outdoors Month involves more than three
dozen organizations, and activities are continually being linked to the
organization’s calendar.
