Walt Disney World: Always a Happy Place

Originally Published in MotorHome Magazine

It’s not just Mickey Mouse who makes anything Disney so special, but he
helps. He occasionally spreads his joy to the Magic Kingdom’s neighbor
at Walt Disney World in Florida: EPCOT. The truly breathtaking and
memorable Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow, built in 1982,
is a must-see/must-do. The icon of the magnificently constructed park is
the Geosphere Earth at the entrance, spreading its excitement across
Future World and the World Showcase Lagoon. Future World combines
science, life, intelligence and beauty; make certain to visit the
5.7-million-gallon aquarium and thrill to the “Seas with Nemo and
Friends.”

For a first-hand lesson in history, geography, social studies and ethnic
diversity, however, plan to spend a full day or two at the World
Showcase. This exquisite and worthwhile section features 19 pavilions
stationed around a glittering lagoon; spectacular during the day, the
lagoon really comes to life at night when fireworks, lasers and dancing
lights present “Illuminations: Reflections of Earth.”

Yes, there are a handful of the requisite amusement rides
tucked into a couple of the country pavilions (Mexico, Norway), but it
is the individual architecture, culture and beauty of the countries that
mesmerize visitors. Two of the most impressive are Italy and France. At
the Italian pavilion, guests will discover a microcosm of Venice,
replete with the Companile of St. Mark’s Square and L’Originale Alfredo
di Roma Ristorante, in addition to beautiful shops offering the finest
in Italian leather goods and ceramics. The French Pavilion is a visit
back to the late 1800s in Paris, a period known as the La Belle Epoque.
Here in the charming land of courtyards and narrow streets, visitors
enjoy street fairs, pastries, perfumes and even a wrap-around movie
titled “Impressions de France.”

Many of the other pavilions offer excellent movies,
restaurants, exotic fare and a glimpse into other worlds. For those who
have never been across the sea, EPCOT presents a special sampling and
leaves you with a taste for more.
