Multiple slideouts in truck campers have sparked a new wave of floorplan innovations. No longer restricted to the space between a pickup’s wheel wells, models such as the Eagle Cap 1160 provide previously unheard of comfort and elbowroom for slide-in camper fans.
Minimal graphics keep the camper looking uncluttered, but the 1160 stands high off the truck bed because the floor starts at the truck’s bedrail. That feature also opens up the sub-floor area for sizable storage space, plus large holding tanks and compartments for the optional 2,500-watt Onan LP-gas fueled generator ($3,220 plus prep, $413).
Eagle Cap uses its aluminum frame with polystyrene insulation, Thermo Polyolefin (TPO) roof and a gel-coat fiberglass cap construction technique to build the 1160. Features include all-vinyl flooring throughout, plus hardwood-face frames and cabinet doors, day/night shades and hand-upholstered window trim. In addition, full-extension metal ball-bearing glides for the drawers are standard. And the holding tanks are enclosed, insulated and heated, making this an all-season camper.
The frame of the Eagle Cap 1160 is sturdy and the tanks are heated and hidden.
Step inside through the unit’s rear corner side-entry door, by way of a fold-down three-step stairway (and possibly a platform on the ground below the steps, depending on your truck bed height) outside and a step inside the body, and you immediately see the wide-open space created by the pair of slideouts. To the left, the back wall slideout houses a sofa/bed with overhead cabinets and a small wardrobe next to the entry door. There’s also a good-sized window for enjoying the scenery. The roomy fixed dinette on the street side also moves out in its own slideout that also houses the large refrigerator and some overhead storage cabinets. Eagle Cap is big on windows and the view from the dinette won’t keep anyone from enjoying the scenery.
The L-shaped kitchen on the curbside offers an amazing amount of space — larger than many we’ve seen in trailers or significantly larger motorhomes. The open patch of floor means there is no crowding the cook.
With lots of storage for the space and a folding counter, the galley is huge for a truck camper.
A complete array of accessories including range and stovetop, microwave, dual-bowl sink in the solid granite-coat countertop and a variety of drawers and cabinets make up the superbly functional kitchen.
An optional 19-inch LCD TV is mounted on the bathroom bulkhead, just forward of the kitchen, facing aft for viewing by those on the sofa bed or dinette. The camper is pre-wired for most popular accessories such as a solar panel, stereo and speakers, TV antenna and the air conditioner. The camper we spent time in, courtesy of George M. Sutton RV in Eugene, OR (www.suttonrv.com) included the optional air conditioner with a digital wall thermostat ($1,106).
The fixed dinette offers enough room for most meals.
The dry bath is in an enclosure just forward of and abutting the kitchen. It includes a regular curtain-enclosed shower, a marine-style flush toilet on a raised base for increased height, a single-bowl sink in a roomy vanity counter and two good-sized storage cabinets. This is not your usual cramped camper bath. Knee space, floor space, dressing and maneuvering room are all a part of this package. A large, domed skylight brings in extra light and headroom into the shower.
Due to the floor height, the main front bed is accessed with a simple step up, no climbing required. The 60-by-80-inch queen bed is oriented front-to-back, and the bedroom includes a wide, but none-too-tall mirrored-door wardrobe curbside, and a smaller shirt closet street side. An optional 19-inch LCD TV ($511) is mounted on the bulkhead at the foot of the bed and uses a swivel arm for angle adjustability. Two adjustable overhead reading lights are situated at the head of the bed.
The 1160 weighs 4,298 pounds dry, so by the time you add 75 gallons of freshwater and all your gear it’s going to call for a heavy-duty truck to safely haul it. Realistically, an F-450 will be the proper truck to handle this camper. However, once properly set up, the Eagle Cap 1160 brings an entirely new definition of space and creature comfort to the truck camper market.
