Volkswagen is entering the minivan market with its new Routan at a time when General Motors and Ford have quit, leaving Chrysler, Honda’s Odyssey and Toyota’s Sienna as top contenders. The VW Routan is the result of a partnership with Chrysler, which is producing the Routan on the same assembly line as the Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan. Styling is slightly different but most of the mechanical components such as the 3.8- and 4.0-liter V-6 engines and transmissions are shared with the Chrysler products. VW did add 15% more ride stiffness and eliminated some features, such as Swivel ‘n Go and Stow ‘n Go seating. Routan’s base price is $24,700.
