Up on the Malabar Farm

Originally Published in MotorHome Magazine

Sure, the 15 campsites may only be rustic, but don’t let the limited
digs prevent you from visiting Malabar Farm. This truly special state
park located 12 miles southeast of Mansfield, Ohio, serves up so much
history and so many activities that everyone should easily find
something to crow about.

Built as the private residence of the highly successful
writer Louis Bromfield, the 32-room country home, or “Big House,” as
it’s called, remains much the way it was in 1956, at the time of
Bromfield’s death. Guests can tour the residence and feel how the author
of such books as From My Experience and Early Autumn lived.

Tractor-drawn wagon tours of the farm depart on the hour in the
summer and run for 45 minutes. After picking pumpkins from the on-site
patch in October, cross-county skiing in the winter, or any other time,
for that matter, a meal at the Malabar Inn Restaurant will round out the
day nicely. A spinning and weaving guild showcases its wares and
know-how throughout the year on Mondays and on weekends during the
summer.

Events such as a Maple Syrup Festival, a Fishing Derby and a
Hearthside Cookery Workshop take place throughout the year. And, by the
way, besides being far ahead of its time in the use of sustainable
farming practices, and in addition to hosting numerous Hollywood
celebrities, Malabar Farm also hosted the 1945 wedding of Humphrey
Bogart and Lauren Bacall.
