There was a time – before motorhome types became alphabetized – when midsize coaches were little more than revamped trailers mounted to pickup-truck chassis. Those designs may have morphed into the contemporary Class C coach, but the original concept didn’t die out, by any means. In fact, chassis-mount motorhomes are still alive and well in Northglenn, Colorado, where Provan Industries manufactures motorhomes that seem a bit out of the mainstream – and the company’s Tiger CX motorhome continues that tradition.
Unlike Class C motorhomes, the Provan Tiger CX is built on the Chevrolet 2500 heavy-duty pickup-chassis cab instead of a cutaway-van chassis. That distinction, which makes the motorhome a chassis-mount, as they were known years ago, creates a uniquely size coach that bridges the gap between B- and C-Class motorhomes. “The Tiger CX is a parking-space-sized motorhome with a surprisingly comfortable and spacious interior in a 19-foot package,” says Dave Roew, Provan Industries owner and president. “There are no head knockers (and) the interior is wide-open. Compared to a Class-B van-style motorhome … we offer a lot more interior floor space and living area, and have two full-size beds, including a big cabover main bed, that people appreciate for guests, grandkids and the like. We also have a new large outside storage area that a lot of people asked for.” A welded aluminum frame is standard, as are an enclosed bath with shower, full self-containment features and most frequently asked-for motorhome accessories, including large freshwater and holding tanks, as well as a generous LP-gas supply. The standard powertrain for the GM-based Tiger is Chevrolet’s 6.0-liter, 300-hp fuel-injected Vortec engine backed by a four-speed automatic transmission.
Virtually any GM option can be ordered for the chassis, including the company’s variety of cab offerings and other options. Chassis selection and flexibility are strong points for the
Tiger. “Extended cab, Crew Cab, standard cab, four-wheel-drive (4WD), gas or diesel, manual transmission – any option on a standard 8-foot-bed pickup – GM, Ford or Dodge – is
available,” says Roew. “You can get it with 4WD and the ground clearance to match, and
people really appreciate the freedom of being able to go where they want to go.” The Tiger
CX is base-priced at $60,398. A five-year frame-and-structure warranty, plus a two-year
warranty for the balance of the motorhome, are standard; the chassis carries the original
