The Scenic Route: Sweets For My Sweet

Originally Published in Trailer Life Magazine

Okay, so you let Valentine’s Day pass without doing something nice for your sweetheart (trust me, you’re not alone in this).  So here’s some advice that just might get you out of the doghouse.

In my experience, there’s nothing like hitching up the trailer for a little road trip, just the two of you, to mend fences and get you back in your partner’s good graces.   When the getaway involves traveling The Scenic Route, well, that just makes the experience that much more special.

With all that in mind, here are five scenic byways that combine outstanding drives with “sweet” detours designed to give you two ideal opportunities to kiss and make up:

Journey Through Hallowed Ground Byway
If there’s ever a time to indulge one’s lust for chocolate, Valentine’s Day would be it.  And if there’s ever a place it would be Hershey, PA near the start of this historic multi-state byway.  While you’re here, do not miss the opportunity to score points with one of the chocolate-infused treatments offered at The Spa At The Hotel Hershey.

Lake Champlain Byway
Vermont may be home to quaint villages and bucolic scenery, but this byway’s prime attraction may well be the detour to Waterbury, home of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream where every factory tour ends with a free taste.

Florida Keys Scenic Highway
Where better to sample Florida’s “official” dessert, Key Lime Pie than in Key West where it originated.  The byway’s drop-dead gorgeous views, well, let’s just say they’re—ahem—the icing on the cake.

Las Vegas Boulevard State Scenic Byway
Classic neon signs, now preserved as works of art in the center median, make this quite possibly the only scenic byway that’s best experienced after dark.  Afterwards, head over to M&M World just a few miles away in the heart of the Las Vegas strip for dessert.

Highway 1/Big Sur Coast Highway
Before heading down to Monterey for a trip down what very well may be America’s most romantic road, stop in the Bay Area suburb of Fairfield to load up on supplies from the Jelly Belly Factory.  The best part, of course, are the free samples of the 150 different flavors produced here.
